High dose vitamin D has been safely and effectively used in critically ill patients in hospital settings to rapidly improve blood levels of vitamin D and help the patients have shorter hospital stays, be less likely to die in the hospital, and to have a better immune response. Vitamin D3 was were typically given as 50,000 to 100,000 IU per day for 5 days, for a total dose of 250,000 to 500,000 IU. Vitamin D3 has been shown to shorten hospital stays and lessen mortality in those patients who were deficient in vitamin D.
If a person gets a serious viral infection when in a low vitamin D state, he or she can take very high doses of vitamin D to quickly replenish vitamin D. Three days of a dose of 150,000 IU per day will work very well for this, followed by a weekly dose of 50,000 IU. Vitamin D3 is oil soluble, so it is best absorbed when taken with food containing oil or fat.
